What is Fashion Merchandising Online?
We are an educational and informational site for anyone who wants to learn about and stay in-
formed about fashion. We were the first to offer a browser-based fashion textbook with evolving content.
Our purpose is to teach fashion, to keep the information current, and to reach many.
The series collection is comprised of 3 books. Vol. I,
The Fashion Industry, is a reflection of the current
fashion season. It's like a seasonal fashion magazine, literary textbook, and topical news all in one.
Vol. II,
Elements of Art in Fashion, embraces a cultural view of dress and appearance. It takes you
on a slower moving journey of gradual regeneration that evolves with the changing social
atmosphere around us. Vol. III,
The Evolution of Fashion. encompasses both by recounting the fashion
trends that dominated the style of dress during particular periods throughout history.
Each book is a comprehensive course of study for the subject title. Unlike a college or university,
you will not earn credits. However, if your goal is entrepreneurial, you may find that the
instruction you receive and the knowledge you gain are enough to confidently launch your fashion business.
For those exploring the possibility of choosing fashion as a career, you have the opportunity to see
if you even like fashion before making the decision to enroll in a college program. For enrolled
students at colleges and universtities, we provide a reasonably priced textbook for your class. For
independent learners, each book is like taking a college fashion course except there are no
additional costs to pay like tuition, parking, and course fees. In this, the savings can be quite ex-
traordinary.
Our primary emphasis is women's fashion. Certain sections address menswear, but note that the
majority of illustration examples, the designers covered, and the fashion show reviews focus on
women's fashion. If you aspire to design men's clothing or to open a men's clothing store, you will
benefit from the fashion industry information in Vol. I and selected sections in Vol. II.
What is the academic level of the books?
The content of the books is derived from the course material that Janet Reed used for her lectures
as a college fashion instructor. It is considered undergraduate level while it also addresses ad-
vanced topics and learning levels. How you receive the information (and more, how you apply the
information) will be relative to where you are. The books were uniquely designed to be read
more than once as you will interpret the information differently at various stages of your life and
career.
There are ample challenges throughout each book, plenty of interesting topics to get your attention
and progress your thinking, and an impressive collection of fine art illustrations to stir your
imagination.
What is a browser-based book?
The books have some elements characteristic of a traditional book but are viewed using a computer
device. This opens up a world of features you have grown accustomed to - like easy navigation,
having access to apps and programs you like to use, the ability to work on other things in another
window, and access to the Internet.
The digital format makes it possible for the author to update the material - at anytime - in response
to relevant new information. This was a major reason why the format was chosen. Traditional
publishers of literary works need substantial lead time for layout, printing, and distribution. For a
subject like fashion (excluding fashion history), a good portion of the book can already be old news
before it even reaches the shelf.
You will love the hands-free feature - no more fighting with a book trying to anchor down a page
while attempting to take notes or work on a project. Going paperless may seem a little awkward at
first, but when you can click to go to a section, you suddenly realize that it's the same principal as
thumbing through the pages of a book, only easier. And no more lugging around heavy books!
Viewing the book on your desktop computer is most ideal as you have a larger monitor and the
working area of your desk surrounding you, but via your laptop or tablet, you can study on-the-go
anywhere.
For what age is the language, academic level, and social content appropriate?
The content is suitable for 18 years and older. The intent is to create content that is respectful and
considerate to the general populace while also reflecting the current cultural atmosphere. For more
information about content appropriateness, please review the Disclaimers section in the License
Agreement.
It is our intent to present and maintain a respectable and accurate educational and informational
resource for visitors to our site and for those who purchase our books. By reading this entire site,
you should have a good idea of what you can expect in terms of our commitment to education, the
fashion industry, the social community, and social evolution.
Gainful experience as you learn
The principles are presented in a logical and methodical sequence in a manner that builds on prior
learning. There is ample use of nearby illustrations, charts, graphics, and photographs to provide a
visual representation of a concept or to aid in the assimilation of the material. Unlike traditional
publishing, dynamic elements can also be incorporated like video and sound which lend to an en-
gaging learning experience.
The word "test" was never spoken in Janet's classroom. Instead, she developed challenging pro-
jects to help her students make use of the information. This is a standard she felt strongly about
preserving in her digital books. In Volume II, you will find a project at the end of most major
subject areas. Doing the projects is encouraged because they will help you grasp the material you
just learned and will equip you with a working knowledge to apply to your job, work, or intended
use. For Volume. I, you will finish the entire book before suggested projects are discussed. This is
intentional, because how you go about completing the projects will be relevant to your chosen
path in fashion and by book's end, you should have a fairly good idea about which sector most
interests you.
Upon completion, many of the projects will serve as reference manuals to add to your developing
fashion library.....a notebook about color psychology/perception, another representing design
styles and how they alter body lines.....a directory of designers and fashion houses.....and you
will learn how to develop a Fashion Week Report to help you track style trend beginnings. The
projects will help you progress your knowledge in that subject area. They will help you advance
your skills in the workplace. And if your interest is casual rather than academic, the projects are
equally rewarding for awareness and personal development.
Fashion Merchandising Online is especially dedicated to bringing fashion education to individuals
who choose or have need for an independent, at-home, or self-guided learning environment. You
are buying the same material we sell to students enrolled in a college fashion course.
Continuing Study
This offering is extended by invitation to individuals who have purchased FASH 01. The program is
designed for advanced learning and thereafter as an ongoing knowledge base for fashion professionals
- those who have decided to stay with fashion and have made fashion their career. Following your
purchase of Vol. I: The Fashion Industry, you will be issued a FASHION ID. Among its benefits is the
ability to purchase "Fashion for Thought".
Fashion for Thought is an insightful commentary aimed to get you thinking forward. It covers a
range of topical events and foreseeable consequences affecting the fashion industry and gives Janet
the opportunity to connect with you in a more profound way.
Fashion for Thought includes the current edition of The Fashion Industry. This book is updated
every new fashion season. In this, it is very beneficial to those who want to stay abreast to the ongoing
changes in the industry. As each new fashion season nears, you will anticipate with excitement
the release of the next edition. Every seasonal edition includes the Fashion Week Report covering
the shows in Paris, Milan, London, and New York as well as all the changes that happened in the
fashion industry since the initial edition you purchased. And your loyalty discount gets you
nearly 75% off the bundled list price!
It is Janet's desire that in time you develop an astuteness of your own to read the market, assimilate
the effects of critical industry changes, and write your own Fashion Week Report. The Continuing
Study program is purchase-per-season-based. There's no subscription or obligation, so if you want to
stop, just don't order again. It's that easy.
Fashion Schools and Programs
We are committed to supporting educators, fashion programs, and enrolled students with material
that is well-researched and current and that provides lifelong value to those pursuing a career in
fashion. Students pay high costs for an education today. Everyone complains about the high price
of textbooks and some instructors list two or three required and recommended books for a single
course!
And why aren't students keeping their course books after completion of the class? Using outdated
teaching material or a textbook that can not be used later as a reference is a disservice to a
student paying a premium for a college education. This needs to be addressed and that's what these
books offer!
Volume I: The Fashion Industry and Volume II: Elements of Art in Fashion COMPREHENSIVELY cover
a VAST number of topics and are often suitable for several different courses in a fashion
program. Besides a generous student discount, students enrolled in several classes may be able to reduce the number of
course books they need to buy.
Students
When your instructor participates in our school program, you receive a discount of nearly 30% off the
purchase price of your textbook. With the purchase of Vol. I: The Fashion Industry, you will be issued a
FASHION ID which can be applied to the Continuing Study opportunity (see above for details).
Fashion Instructors
The books are appropriate for traditional lecture as well as distance learning courses. It is our aim
to make your job a whole lot easier by providing you with a quality textbook and teaching
reference. We appreciate you choosing us for your textbook(s)!
If you teach several courses and/or have an extensive fashion program, we think you might find
that one title has the diversity of content to be used for other courses as well, cutting costs for your
students who are working toward a degree in your program.
Besides the discount extended to your students, your book is comped. For each succeeding school
term, you are supplied with the most recent, current version of the title. You must reapply each
succeeding school term. There are two reasons for this policy: a) the book must be required course
material for a class listed in the schedule of courses for said quarter/semester with you listed as the
instructor and b) you will be teaching from the most current version of the textbook.
The procedure for applying is quite simple. Email us at:
fashion-books@fashionmerchandisingonline.com
with the following information:
1) Your name and contact information (campus email address + campus mailing address)
2) A link to your school's website page showing the "course title", "school term dates", and "your
name listed as the instructor"
3) A link indicating that our book is designated as the required text for your course
4) Upon approval, you will receive your License Key and further instructions. After the initial
school term, the process requires less time as you already have your license key.
5) Please review the
E-Book License Agreement for Instructors as you will be bound by its terms
and provisions.
6) Your complimentary book expires at the end of the school term. You will use this same pro-
cess each school term to reapply.
7) We do not sell our books through campus bookstores. Instead, your students will pay for their
textbook through our website. Each "registered student in your class" will be issued a single-
use Coupon Code which reduces the price near to 30%.
Our aim is to make these course study books available to anyone who has the curiosity to learn
about fashion. The public library system plays a big part in this as it provides a way to reach those
who lack the resources to purchase a book of their own.
It is our goal that every community in the U.S. has access to the books through their local branches.
For those branches unable to find a place in their budget, we will continue our efforts to connect
donors or to fill this capacity ourself.
We charge no extra or commercial fees for multiple user access. Our only stipulation is that each
branch buys and houses its own book(s). The software will not allow sharing between branches.
The books are to be classified as reference material and only available for viewing inside the
branch. We have special security methods designed for libraries which we will discuss with you.
Your order is handled via account. To initiate this procedure, please email the following informa-
tion to fashion-books@fashionmerchandisingonline.com:
1) Your name and title
2) Your branch name and branch address
3) A daytime contact phone number
4) Your branch contact email address
5) As the purchasing agent representing your branch, please review the
E-Book License Agreement for Public Libraries as you will be bound by its terms
and provisions.
6) We will provide you with a custom order link once your account is established.
Order Processing
The books are available to U.S. customers only.
After your purchase, you will receive confirmation of your order via email with a link to down-
load the book application setup file. This will come from our file host provider and payment
processor FastSpring. The download link is valid for 7 days. Within 1-3 business days after
your purchase, you will receive an email from us. For Independent Study purchasers, the email
will include shipment details for your license key (USB) along with instructions for how to
activate your book. For Enrolled Student purchases, the email will include your activation key.
Your USB license key will be issued by your instructor.
Your USB license key will work with all of your devices to which you download the setup file.
The USB license key does not store the book, but it must be plugged into the device in order to
open the book. You will be able to read your book(s) on only one device at a time.
Installation of your book software is as uncomplicated as any type of software you have ever
installed on your Windows PC. The software application is safe to download. It is digitally signed
and certifed with a Microsoft Authenticode Certificate to verify that the product is in fact from us.
Should you purchase more than one title, your USB license key will work with all books. So all
future purchases, editions, additional titles, new titles, and programs are tagged to one USB.
Each book, however, requires its own activation key. This is a simple file that is emailed to you. After
your first purchase then, the process of ordering another book will be much faster as you already
have the physical USB license key. You only need the activation key which will be emailed to you.
Each order is custom. We appreciate your patience. Most orders are processed within 1-3 business
days. Receipt of the USB License Key (shipped via USPS) takes another 3-4 business days.
Payment processing is administered by FastSpring, based in Santa Barbara, California. FastSpring
also serves as our application file download host provider. Available payment options are Visa
(credit/debit cards), MasterCard (credit/debit cards), American Express, Discover, PayPal, and
Amazon Pay.
Please note that by law, some states require that sales tax be collected on digital products. The
amount of the tax collected is in accordance with the governing body of the state where the product
is purchased.

system. You should download the setup to all of your devices and store the setup file to use in the
event you buy a new compter. We cannot guarantee that the software will continue to function properly
after Windows 11 but you can try.
Upon receipt of your License Key, be expedient in inserting it into your device(s) and opening your
book(s). While the license keys are tested before they are mailed out, there may be occasions when
the flash drive fails. If so, we will gladly replace it. The USB must be returned and postage will
be paid by the publisher.
A NO REFUND policy is strictly enforced. Please preview the book via one of the options above to
assure that the content is satisfactory to your liking and expectations. BEFORE YOU PURCHASE,
verify that the software is compatible with your dedicated device(s). Technical requirements are
detailed below and you are reminded of these specifications again before you place your order.
What is needed to view the books?
A desktop, laptop, or tablet with a
Windows-based operating system The software will run properly on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
It will not work on a phone.
The resolution of your display must be
1280 x 768 or higher.
A larger screen is most ideal. For best readability, a resolution of 1280, 1366, and 1920 are common and work well.

In Windows, you can personalize the background color to make the book a true focal point on your screen. Setting the
background to solid black during your reading session provides a focused canvas for study.
You can read the book offline (an Internet connection is not required). However, Vol. I
includes outside links to designer websites and fashion show videos. You will need to have an Internet
connection to utilize them.

you can study at home, away from home, and on-the-go.
