Overview

Vol. II in the series begins with the most basic tools for creating a design - the elements. After learning about color, line, shape, space, pattern, texture and light, you will move on to the more complex principles of design. While the book largely focuses on clothing design and dress, this knowledge can be applied to any creative design project: art, graphic art for advertising, illustration, photography and specific to the fashion field, to accessory design, textile design, window displays, shelf and floor merchandising, and stage design for fashion shows.

From this foundation, the book then teaches you how to apply the elements and principles to design styles and dress. You will become aware of the various female and male body shapes, learn why garment styles physically change their appearance on different body lines, and develop the ability to choose styles that create proportion and balance for the natural characteristics of individual body lines - yours and others.

A full chapter is devoted to the finishing of a design or look which includes accessories, hairstyle, and makeup. This chapter also addresses cultural aspects of dress like first impressions and dress as a communication tool. You will learn how to use the social psychology of dress to your advantage when interacting with others.

From a cultural standpoint, Elements of Art in Fashion largely reflects mass tastes within our domestic social sphere while being attentive to the broader view. Rather than attempt to dictate style or fashion, it gives you the tools and options to express your own personal design and dress style. Whether you are a designer, consultant, store owner, sales associate, or you simply want some practical guidance in clothing selection, this is information that can be applied season after season after season.
